A regional maritime security task force has expanded its vessel tracking and information-sharing coverage across a wider stretch of Gulf of Guinea coastline, building on the Yaoundé Architecture framework that coordinates maritime security cooperation among Central and West African states.
The expanded coverage is intended to give naval forces earlier warning of vessels behaving suspiciously, such as unusual course changes near known shipping lanes, allowing patrol assets to be positioned more effectively.
Officials involved in the initiative say the expansion reflects lessons learned from earlier phases of the programme, where gaps in coverage between participating countries' zones sometimes delayed a coordinated response.
